As was to be expected the current government has decided to annul what the previous had put in place: there will be no criminology Universities in France. The left (along with misplaced apples and pears alliances with a few others), obsessively focused on one person, purely because he had the bad taste, according to them, to be from the right and a friend of Mr Sarkozy – but what they really wanted was to protect individual cushy territories – has sadly won over reason. These people and the current government have thereby abandoned practitioners, French citizens and taxpayers, students and PhD students, and the entire nation.

I shan’t lose time or energy elaborating on this deplorable sign of mediocrity, which unfortunately often prevails in this country, as it would be as vain as Don Quichotte’s windmill battles: this is deeply ingrained in the local culture.

As I wrote here several months ago, I shall devote my time trying to make things change at local level, I shall continue my criminology research and work on cutting-edge diplomas and experiment with modern teaching methods (French universities still teach like in the 19th century); I shall be on probation institutions and practitioners’ case so that they do integrate science in their practices; and lastly, I shall, more than ever, work with my fellow counter-parts in Europe: this country is alas far too narrow-minded and isolationist.
